Rõuge Ööbikuorg (Nightingale Valley) lies in the heart of Haanja Nature Park, within the picturesque Rõuge primeval valley shaped by glacial meltwaters nearly 15,000 years ago. It is a place where nature, folklore, and human ingenuity exist side by side.

In spring, the valley is filled with the song of nightingales and the scent of blooming bird cherry trees. The Tindi Stream and its springs feed the chain of Rõuge’s seven lakes, the deepest of which – Lake Rõuge Suurjärv – is also the deepest lake in Estonia (38 m).

There is much to discover along the valley slopes and floor:

• Tindioru hydraulic rams – rare water pumps that operate without electricity, powered entirely by the force of flowing water.

• Ööbikuoru hydro-workshop museum – established in 1912, where water power once drove lathes and generators.

• Rõuge Ancient Farmstead – a reconstructed model site introducing the buildings and lifestyle of an ancient farm. It includes a barn, dwelling house, conical hut, granary, beehive, and iron-smelting furnace. Information boards at each structure provide insight into ancient life and craftsmanship.

• Inglisild (Angel's Bridge) – a suspension bridge spanning the deepest section of Ööbikuorg, connecting the Rõuge settlement with hiking trails and the lake region.

• Pesapuu watchtower – a 30-metre-high symbolic bird’s nest tower topped with a glowing “egg”, offering breathtaking views over the entire primeval valley and lake chain.

• Natural wildflower meadows and forest trails, providing habitat for diverse plant, insect, and bird species

• Rauakaev (Iron Spring) - a natural spring distinguished by its rust-red appearance, while remaining exceptionally clean and pure.

• Rõuge primeval valley and lakes. Ööbikuorg forms one of the most scenic sections of the Rõuge Seven Lakes hiking trail (Rõuge Primeval Valley Trail). This approximately 10-kilometre route winds between lakes, forests, and valley slopes, leading from Ööbikuorg to Hinni Canyon.

• Rõuge song festival grounds and songbirds.

• Rõuge hillfort and site of the ancient stronghold.

• Rõuge Ööbikuorg Visitor Centre – an exhibition space introducing local history and the region, where visitors can also purchase refreshments or souvenirs from the café. The visitor centre is open daily from June to August, 11:00–18:00.

This is a place where time slows down. Here, you can feel the breath of the earth, the calming movement of water, and the enduring ingenuity of human hands that has stood the test of time.

Visiting Rõuge Ööbikuorg is free of charge.

From spring 2026, a payment terminal will be installed at Pesapuu watchtower, and visitors will also be able to make a voluntary contribution online. Contributions help preserve the Ööbikuorg environment and support its continued development for future generations.
