EXPLORE THE DESTINATIONS:

1. Go to a smoke sauna – Võrumaa’s oldest wellness ritual

The Võromaa smoke sauna tradition was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014. Autumn is the best time to experience it.

The steam of a smoke sauna is soft, and its scent lingers long in memory. After the sauna, a lake, pond, or river awaits.

Where to go:

  • Mooska Smoke Sauna Farm (Mooska Farm, Haanja village, Rõuge parish)
The sauna sits by a pond and accommodates up to 8 people at a time. The hosts also introduce the rich heritage of the smoke sauna.

  • Uue-Saaluse Wine Farm (Kõivsaare Farm, Rõuge parish)
The smoke sauna fits up to 8 people, available either independently or guided by a sauna master. A wine tour is available before the sauna.

  • Hinniala Cave Sauna (Vana-Hinniala Farm, Võru parish)
This cave smoke sauna is located on the edge of the ancient Piusa Valley, high on the riverbank, and after the steam you can plunge straight into the river. The smaller sauna accommodates 4–5 people, the larger up to 8. Hiking in the Piusa ancient valley at Hinniala is available before the sauna. • Hämsa Maheresto & Wellness Centre (Meegomäe village, Võru)
Spend an entire weekend in one place: smoke sauna ritual, making traditional karask flatbread and sourdough bread, meals, and accommodation from Friday to Sunday.

  • Pokumaa (Urvaste village, Antsla parish)
Every Saturday in October, the smoke sauna is heated for visitors by 4 PM, and after the steam, the brave can take a dip in the spring pond. No advance booking needed—just drop in and join the shared sauna.

Experience pure authenticity with Pille. Go on a guided hike through the ancient Piusa Valley to Hinniala hillfort (Päevapööramise hill)—one of Estonia's oldest and most unique promontory-type hillforts. Whatever the weather brings, you can warm up in the cave smoke sauna afterwards. Contact: Pille Malkov, +372 529 8643, pille.malkov@gmail.com
