Mõniste Rural Life Museum is located in Kuutsi village in Rõuge Parish. The museum was founded in 1948 by Alfred Lepp and is now part of the museum department of Võru Institute. The museum offers an authentic overview of the life of the peasants of Old Võromaa from the Stone Age to the mid-20th century. In addition to traditional farmhouse buildings, the exhibition includes smoke saunas, cone-shaped dwellings, and the interior of a village shop from the 1920s and 1930s.
The museum offers a variety of hands-on workshops, including bread baking, spinning yarn from sheep’s wool, processing flax into yarn, woodworking, and visits to a traditional smoke sauna. Heritage skills days, Võru language camps, summer camps, and language-themed events are also organised regularly. Visitors can take part in museum lessons, educational days, and field-trip programmes.
The museum grounds can be used for seminars and events, and visitors may also enjoy the smoke sauna. A selection of handicrafts, local food products, souvenirs, and items from the museum shop is available on site. Guided tours can be arranged in both Estonian and Võru language.
During the summer season (from May to September), the museum is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00. During the winter season (from October to April), it is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 14:00. The museum is closed on national holidays.
