Located in the Rõuge Ööbikuorg visitor area, specifically in Tindiorg, are Estonia’s only working hydraulic rams – historic devices that pump water without electricity, using only the kinetic energy of flowing water. They are a rare example of ingenious engineering and local resourcefulness, and have been restored for visitors to observe.

A hydraulic ram (vesioinas) is an ingenious device that uses the energy of flowing water to pump water upwards, requiring no external energy to operate. Friedrich Johanson, the master of Tindioru Farm, built his first hydraulic ram in 1939, unaware that a similar invention had already been patented in France in 1796. This unique device is still in operation today, lifting about 3 cubic metres of water per day to a height of 30 metres — completely without electricity.
Hydraulic rams are suitable for locations with flowing water and a natural difference in elevation. In Rõuge, they are powered by springs that do not freeze even in winter.
How the hydraulic ram works:
Water flowing from the spring forces a valve to close.
This creates a pressure surge that drives part of the water upwards.
Air is compressed, which helps push the water into a storage tank.
The valve then opens, and the cycle repeats.
There are two hydraulic rams here in total. The first is a single-valve ram, and visitors can also see a double-valve ram in operation, designed and built in 2002 by Jüri Johanson — continuing the technical legacy of his father, Friedrich Johanson.
