Plaani Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas is a grand 19th-century historicist Orthodox sanctuary in Plaani village, Võru County. Built of red brick and fieldstones with a Greek-cross ground plan, featuring a bell tower, a ridge tower, and four onion-dome towers, this church is a truly unique cultural and architectural gem. Nestled in the heart of the Haanja Uplands, it is surrounded by the tranquil peace of natural landscapes and traditional village life.
The church became the spiritual heart of the region, boasting a congregation of nearly 500 people by 1925. However, during the Soviet era, the Haanja-Plaani congregation was closed, and the building was repurposed as a warehouse for the local collective farm. Following the restoration of Estonian independence, there were plans to establish a monastery in Plaani, but the initiative remained unfinished as suitable candidates for monks could not be found.
Today, the church can be admired from the outside, and during the summer season, it can be visited during special events. Right next to the church, the traditional Plaani scythe hay mowing competition takes place every year on June 24th, bringing together locals and visitors alike to celebrate authentic rural heritage.
