In recent years, the Rõuge municipality has become an increasingly popular stopover for those travelling with a caravan, motorhome or simply a tent. The reason is simple: here you will find ancient valleys, lakes, peace and quiet, and room to breathe. And most importantly — there are already several options, each in its own unique way.

We introduce three options, all located in Rõuge municipality, but offering very different, authentic experiences.

Krabi Camping — Estonia's southernmost caravan park

Located in the village of Krabi, right near the Latvian border, this caravan park was built on a former school stadium. The green lawn has space for 64 pitches with water and electricity connections, plus spacious areas for campers — and pets are welcome too.

Krabi Camping is built on smart self-service: booking, access and sauna use take just a few clicks, without reception desks or queues. Electricity comes from solar panels. The surrounding area boasts the forests of Paganamaa, hiking and cycling trails, and lakes steeped in legend, with the Pähni Visitor Centre and forest megaphones waiting nearby. On site you can grill, fish and heat up the sauna, while a village shop and tavern are just 500 metres away.

This is a place for those who want absolute peace — and at the same time to be right at the gateway that opens the way forward to Paganamaa.

Tindioru Farm — caravan park on the edge of the ancient Rõuge valley

Located in the village of Tindi, right on the edge of the Rõuge Ööbikuoru (Nightingale Valley), you will find Tindioru Farm. The caravan park can accommodate up to 25 caravans and host up to 24 people, with pitches equipped with electricity connections and WiFi on site.

The camping area is situated right on the edge of the valley, overlooking the lakes of Rõuge — a fireplace and an outdoor kitchen are available for guests. Pure, healing spring water can be replenished directly from the valley. All the necessities are provided for caravans and motorhomes: washrooms, electricity supply and a disposal station, plus a shower and sauna in the holiday home. Nearby is the Pesapuu watchtower, the Ööbikuoru hiking trails and several lakes.

Tindioru Farm is also well suited for larger groups — you can celebrate birthdays, weddings or corporate events on site, as in addition to the caravan pitches, there are several accommodation buildings and a holiday house.

Kirbu Farm — private caravan parking in a scenic location

The third option is completely different — small and private. In the village of Kirbu, near Suur Munamägi, Kirbu Farm offers private caravan parking in a beautiful natural setting: electricity, clean drinking water, a natural body of water, a fireplace and an outdoor toilet are available, with camping by arrangement.

This is the place for those seeking a more intimate stopover right in a family or farm yard — cosy and peaceful, without the bustle of a large park, yet in the close vicinity of Suur Munamägi.

6 tourism recommendations from Rõuge municipality: where you must stop with a caravan

Once you have parked your caravan, it is well worth making a few stops to truly discover the Rõuge area. Here are six places we highly recommend to every passing caravan traveller.

1. Suur Munamägi. The highest peak in the Baltic States with an observation tower offering views over three countries. You can enjoy coffee in the tower, and at the foot of the hill awaits the Café-Restaurant Suur Muna, where you can dine or even enjoy a private cinema experience.

2. Rõuge Ööbikuorg. One of the most beautiful ancient valleys in Southern Estonia, with several lakes and hiking trails hidden at its bottom. A great place to stretch your legs after a long drive.

3. Pesapuu watchtower. An observation tower designed like a tree, offering a unique view of Võrumaa from above — a good stopover if you are heading towards Tindioru Farm or Krabi Camping.

4. Paganamaa. A land of legends and lakes, where hiking trails lead through a mysterious landscape. Its proximity to Krabi Camping makes it a natural first or last stop before the Latvian border.

5. Hiking trails around the municipality. Rõuge municipality offers hikers several longer trails — the Forest Trail (Metsa matkarada), Vällamäe hiking trails, the trails of the Haanja Recreation and Sports Centre, and trails of various lengths in the Rõuge Ancient Valley. There is also the opportunity to discover the Luhasoo bog study trail. There is a suitable distance for everyone, whether you want a short stretch or a longer hike.

6. Beautiful lakes. There are 123 lakes in the region, meaning countless opportunities for fishing and stopping. You can stop by the 7 lakes of Rõuge in the small town of Rõuge or at the Estonian Mother monument parking lot. Nearby, Lake Vaskna in the immediate vicinity of Suur Munamägi, Lake Uue-Saaluse, the lakes of Paganamaa and Lake Viitina also await.
